Incorrect Deductions and Exemptions in ITR Can Lead to Serious Consequences
The Income Tax Department has highlighted the grave consequences of misreporting income and making erroneous deductions while filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) for Assessment Year (AY) 2023-24.
Mitali Madhusmita, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana region, has highlighted that certain taxpayers have made refund claims ranging from 75% to 90% of the Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) amount deducted by their employers.

While having words with the media, the official of the income tax department stated that A significant proportion of salaried taxpayers in the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regions have been identified as having made erroneous claims for deductions and exemptions in their Income Tax Returns (ITRs). These incorrect claims have resulted in taxpayers seeking refunds based on these wrongful deductions/exemptions.
Mitali Madhusmita emphasized that under the provisions of the Income-tax Act, of 1961, there are severe repercussions for misreporting income and claiming wrongful deductions. These consequences include interest charged at a rate of 12% per year, penalties amounting to 200% of the taxes involved, and the possibility of prosecution, which can lead to imprisonment.
The deadline to file the Income Tax Return (ITR) for Assessment Year (AY) 2023-24 is July 31 for the majority of taxpayers whose accounts do not require auditing. As of July 2, 2023, over 1.32 crore ITRs have been filed for AY 2023-24.
The Income Tax Department has implemented various initiatives to enhance compliance convenience for taxpayers and promote voluntary adherence. This includes simplifying the ITR forms and streamlining the e-filing process, making it more user-friendly and efficient.
